Escalator and lift closed in Asda, Gravesend, following vandalism

Youths have reportedly vandalised and damaged a supermarket's lifts and escalator.

Asda in Thames Way, Gravesend, has been forced to close its side entrance – which connects the store and the Overcliffe – while it waits for repairs.

Pictures show the doors leading customers into the store have been smashed and it has been blocked off with a pile of baskets.

Multiple signs have also been posted inside to make customers aware of the problems it has been facing.

One reads: "Due to recent incident with youths, we have unfortunately had to close our side entrance due to vandalism and damage caused to lift and escalator.

"We are awaiting repairs to these areas. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Another says: "No bikes or scooters allowed in the store. Please use the designated bike racks and padlock your bike/scooter."

Signs have been posted explaining the incident

The side door is thought to have been closed since Tuesday afternoon and from Monday it will only be accessible from 8am to 8pm.

An Asda spokesman added: "We have temporarily closed the side entrance of our Gravesend store for maintenance purposes.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."
