Granby Place care home in High Street Northfleet for people with learning disabilities set to close

Published: 11:00, 13 June 2014

A care home in Northfleet for people with learning disabilities is set to close.

Granby Place in High Street provides care for eight residents between the ages of 50 and 82.

The home, which has a sensory garden, is run by charity DGSM yourChoice and has been around for about 30 years.

Chief executive of the charity Kevin Williams told the Messenger: “It’s a very old Victorian building and doesn’t meet the needs of the people living there.

“The people are now older and need walking aids and the home is not suitable nor would it be fair to put our younger people with the older people.

“We’re working closely with Kent County Council and Hyde Housing assessing all of the residents’ needs.

“This will likely take us up until the end of July and, once completed, we’ll be in a better position on a time frame on moving people into new placements.”

Staff working at the home are likely to be offered positions elsewhere within the charity.

A spokesman for Kent County Council said clients it had placed at the home would be relocated and County Hall was working with the charity to ensure a smooth transition.

DGSM yourChoice manages four residential care homes including Benham Lodge in Pelham Road, Gravesend.

The latest report by the Care Quality Commission approved the home’s standards.

After a visit in January, the report stated: “People told us they were involved in their care plans and they liked the home and their rooms. One person told us that their room was cold in the morning but the room soon warmed up in the evenings.

“Another person told us the hot water in their room was not hot and their room was too cold so they had bought a heater.”

It added: “People who use the service, staff and visitors were not always protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

“We have judged that this has a minor impact on people who use the service, and have told the provider to take action.”
