A man aged 35 was arrested outside the Co-Op in Whitstable after spitting at officers and telling them he had Covid-19.

Oliver Cook, of no fixed abode, was later charged with two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, theft and criminal damage

He admitted the charges at Medway Magistrates' Court on Tuesday and was jailed for a total of 120 days.

Kent's Chief Constable Alan Pughsley has warned people spitting at emergency workers during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic could get up to two years in prison under new legislation.

He said: "I'm incredibly disappointed, disgusted and appalled that people in society behave like that to any emergency worker.
