Michael West struck an injury-time equaliser for Ebbsfleet on Tuesday night to rescue them a point.

Fleet were heading to defeat in their Blue Square Bet Premier game against Newport County.

It was the second time in a week that West (pictured) had pounced to earn Fleet a point, having done the same at Stockport on Saturday.

The visitors to Stonebridge Road had opened the scoring early in the game, with just four minutes gone, when Elliott Buchanan pounced on a pass and fired past Fleet keeper Preston Edwards.

Newport continued to look threatening but Fleet stood firm and at the other end both Craig Stone and West tested the visiting keeper Danny Potter.

Potter was made to work harder to deny Stavrinou while West blasted an effort into the side netting. Just before the break Liam Enver-Marum’s free-kick caused panic in the Newport box, as they desperately cleared the loose ball.

Ebbsfleet started the second half with intent but Edwards was the man forced to make telling saves, as he twice denied Buchanan and tipped over a McAllister effort.

Fleet had their own moments to level but kept their fans waiting until the fifth minute of injury time to square the match, as West drove a free-kick through a crowd of bodies and turned away in delight as it went in past Potter.

Chances followed at either end to snatch an even later winner, with Ricky Shakes failing to finish a good run and at the other end Felino Jardim smashed a close range chance over the bar.

How important is Michael West going to be for the Fleet this season? Comment below.
