A Gravesend teenager won a trip to Silverstone to learn how an apprenticeship could be the start of an engineering career.

Raman Virk, who goes to Mayfair Grammar School, spent the day working with Redbull Racing Technology apprentice Zoe Haycocks. She learnt how engineering and manufacturing are a key element in building and maintaining the sports cars she sees on television.

Raman, 16, was then whizzed around the Northampton track in a sporty Renault Clio 200, before being treated to a helicopter ride with her sister, Sharan, 17.

Raman said: “It was such a great day. I’ve learned about engineering through driving and flying around Silverstone, and being able to meet Zoe really inspired me.

“I’ve learned about all the routes into the industry and I’m really eager to learn more.”

Apprentice Zoe said: “Working within the industry is a real eye opener. It’s fun, creative and challenging.

“It’s been a great experience sharing my journey with Raman and I’m really pleased to have helped a young woman find out more about this career path.”

Raman won the prize as part of last year’ Tomorrow’s Engineers’ Week, which encouraged young people to consider the range of exciting engineering jobs open to them.
