Police in Gravesend High Street

Police were called after a fracas broke out in Gravesend town centre.

A Kent Police spokesman confirmed officers were in the High Street, near the junction with New Road, after a disturbance near discount UK at lunchtime yesterday.

A witness said they had seen a young man, wearing glasses, yelling at a group of about four other people.

He said: "He was screaming at them. He looked as if he had injuries to his arms. He was very, very angry."

A Police Community Support Officer was trying to separate them, and security staff from other stores were quick to join her. Two passing soldiers also offered help.

The eye witness said: "She managed to defuse the situation and held the group back, but the man just kept shouting."

Subway manager Anita Saleem said the man came into sandwich shop. She said: "He came in and lost control because of what had happened outside.

"He knocked over a table but didn't threaten any staff or customers.

"A friend of his was in here eating and he came in looking for her. Staff are all OK, just a bit shocked."
