Gravesend League faces uncertain future

The future of the Gravesend League is shrouded in uncertainty with secretary Peter Danzey admitting he is fearing the worst.

Two new applications have been received ahead of next month’s annual meeting but as many as five teams have signalled their intentions to withdraw, including Division 2 champions Fleetway Printers who have switched to the Rochester & District League.

Oakfield (two teams) and Riverview United are two other clubs who are set to drop out.

Mr Danzey (pictured) said: "It looks as though we will lose one division next season. It’s a great shame and it will also affect our cup competitions as well.

"The Dartford League went the same way a few seasons ago, let’s hope it is not the beginning of the end."

He believes rising costs of pitch hire, equipment and referees fees and the lack of volunteers are the reasons.

He said: "It costs between £500/£600 (a season) to hire the pitch these days and around £400 for kit. Lifestyles are changing and there are also not the people to do the administration at clubs."
