Old and new were on display when a school marked its 200th anniversary with a summer fete.

Shorne primary held a huge celebration on the school field with dance displays and singing from the children as well as martial arts demonstrations and stalls alongside pin boards of historic photographs.

The day began with a talk by local historian Christoph Bull, who spoke about the school’s rich history, and then the fete got under way but unfortunately it wasn’t long before the heavens opened.

It didn’t put visitors off though, has they carried on enjoying the activities on offer.

Organiser Kaye Bettey said: “It was a washout but a successful washout.

We had around 1,000 visitors and everyone was amazing. People just stood under the gazebos when the rain came.

“By 2pm we had thunder and lightning so we decided to do the raffles and other things inside.

“But everyone was great, staying to help and clearing up in the rain.”

Among the guests were Ann Wellard, a former pupil who now works at the school in Cob Drive, and Carol Coleman, nee King, also a former pupil and one of four generations of her family to attend Shorne Primary.

The school has been collecting money for a new adventure playground to mark its 200 years.

It has now met its fundraising target and work will take place during the summer holidays.
