Pedestrians were lucky to escape injury after a scaffolding board fell into Gravesend High Street.

The plank of wood, approximately 10ft long, hit the middle of the pedestrian street having fallen from scaffolding on top of a three storey building at around 11am.

The scaffolding board was moved to the side of the road after hitting the middle of Gravesend High Street

Fortunately no one was walking beneath when the board fell, but pedestrians had passed by only a short while before and moments after.

Gravesham Council confirmed STG Building Control, which delivers building control services for three Kent councils, is investigating the incident.

Spokesman for Gravesham Borough Council, Melanie Norris said: "The site has been visited by an Stg Surveyor on behalf of the Council.

"An assessment has been carried out from the ground and an adjacent viewing point and our surveyor was unable to view any further potential loose materials that would be affected by the strong winds such as those encountered earlier today.

"The remaining scaffold did not appear immediately dangerous, however the managing agents have been informed of our visit, and their responsibilities to have the scaffold professionally checked, to ensure it is safe.

"Safety of building sites is covered by the Health and Safety Executive who have been advised of the incident."
