A 77-year-old man who died when his mobility scooter collided with a car has saved others after donating organs, his family has revealed.

Alan Newman, from Northfleet, died yesterday, after the crash in Thames Way, at the junction with Vale Road at around 11.45am on Monday.

He was taken to King's College Hospital in London with serious injuries, but could not be saved.

His family have said he was a retired plumber and had been married for 54 years.

He leaves behind a wife, two grown-up children and three grandchildren.

In a statement, Mr Newman's family said: "On the day of the collision Alan was on his way to the medical centre to collect a prescription for his wife.

"After suffering a stroke 15 years ago Alan was dependent on his mobility scooter which had allowed him to maintain his independence.

"Alan's family would like to thank the police, ambulance service and members of the public who cared for him at the scene on Thames Way and all the staff at King's College Hospital who have treated him with such skill, kindness and dignity.

They added: "This has come as a shock and the family would appreciate privacy to allow them to come to terms with their sudden loss."

After the statement had been released, the family revealed Mr Newman's organs had been donated and transplants had taken place.

Police continue to appeal for witnesses to Monday's collision.
