A man was pulled to safety after getting stuck in the muddy banks of the Thames.

Crews across four emergency services worked together to rescue the man, believed to be in his 30s, near Royal Pier Road, Gravesend.

Gravesend’s RNLI were first at the scene at around 6.10pm last night and managed to get the man in a safe position on the river bank and wrap him in a blanket.

Firefighters on one engine from Thames-side used ladders and rescue harnesses to allow paramedics and police to get down to the man and bring him back onto solid ground.

He was suffering from exposure and was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.

A spokesman from Thames-side said: “This is a good example of all the emergency services really working together.”

It is not clear why the man came to be in the mud.
