A mum who loves to run has organised a charity race this weekend to raise money for her first marathon attempt.

Janet Murray, 39, of Milton Hall Road, Gravesend, is taking part in next year’s London Marathon for Bliss, a charity that offers support and care to premature babies and their families.

She said: “My daughter Katy who is eight, was born 11 weeks early, weighing just over two pounds and would never have survived without specialist medical help.

“Thankfully she survived and has no long-term health problems, but it was a frightening time for us, so I’d like to try to help other families in the same situation.”

Janet took up running just 18 months ago.

She said: “A couple of years ago I couldn’t even run up the stairs so to go from that to running half marathons is quite a big thing.”

She has already completed three half marathons and now has her eyes set on the Virgin Money London Marathon next year.

To earn her place, she has promised to raise at least £2,000 and is staging a running event at the Cyclopark, Wrotham Road, Gravesend, on Sunday, 10am to midday.

The day is open to sports fans of all abilities with a 3km walk or run and a 5km option for experienced runners.

For those in need of advice on how to step up their game or just for the occasional pointer, a running coach will be available.

There will also be face-painting, arts and crafts and other activities.

Janet said: “I did a 13-mile half marathon quite comfortably and I’ve got another next month, but the thought of doubling that is quite daunting.

“I’m running it with a friend who’s also from Gravesend called Neil Souten. He’s running for EllenorLions Hospices. We’ll be spurring each other on.”
