A derelict toy shop could be given a new lease of life.

An application has been submitted to transform Nuxley Toys in Milton Road, Gravesend, into two stores, with a revamped shop front, and three flats built.

If approved, part of the former store will be demolished to make way for the two new commercial units and a one-bedroom ground floor flat with a rear amenity space.

A three-storey rear extension has been proposed for two, two-bedroom apartments above the potential new shops.

There are already two residential units at the site, which will be refurbished under the plans, equalling a total of five flats.

Space will be included at the rear of the development for waste and cycle storage with access via a single throughway on the ground floor. Entrance to the building will be from Milton Road.

Nuxley Toys had been trading for 44 years prior to its closure in January 2020.

Its last day was confirmed by former manager Richard Ray who shared the news on Facebook having announced in August 2019 the store would be closing.

He said a number of factors had led to the closure, but cited changes to high street shopping and online trading as the main driving forces.

Selling modern day toys to collectables, party gear, Star Wars items, dolls and more, Nuxley Toys made memories for all ages over the last four decades.

The application to transform the building is pending consideration.

A public notice has been published as the proposed development will affect the appearance of the Gravesend conservation area.

Anyone wishing to make representations about it should do so by writing to Wendy Lane, assistant director at the Civic Centre, Windmill Street, Gravesend, DA12 1AU, by Friday, May 28.
