A FAMILY is in a state of shock after a middle-aged woman pedestrian died after a dustcart, said to be reversing, struck her in Gravesend last weekend.

Pauline Mercer, 55, of New Barn Road, Longfield, near Dartford, died at the accident scene near the Anglesea Shopping Centre. Neighbours paid tribute to Mrs Mercer and described her as "a lovely lady".

The accident happened at about 9.15am on Friday. Passers-by reported seeing a dustcart reversing around the corner of Clive Road and Stone Street. It is believed Mrs Mercer may not have known Stone Street was temporarily being used by two-way traffic. The change, due to drainage works in Princes Street, had only come into effect the previous day.

Mrs Mercer was killed instantly. The driver of the dustcart was treated at the scene for shock. He was questioned by police about the incident and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident. Spokesman Martin Pearce said: “A full and thorough investigation in under way and police are speaking to witnesses. Anyone who may have seen the incident and has not yet contacted the police should contact Gravesend Police Station on 01474 331055.”
