Mayfield Grammar School in Gravesend has been rated as outstanding right across the board by government inspectors.

It was the first inspection the Pelham Road school has had since it became an Academy in February last year.

Its previous inspection in 2008 rated it as ‘good’.

Headteacher Elaine Wilson said: “The judgement reflects the hard work and dedication of all those associated with our school community and I would like to thank all our pupils, staff, parents and governors for their support.

“To achieve an outstanding rating in all categories of school inspection – achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management leading to an outstanding judgement in overall effectiveness - is a fantastic achievement for the school.

“As far as we are aware we are the first secondary school in Gravesham to be awarded an overall outstanding rating.”

Ofsted inspector Graham Tuck praised the pupils’ behaviour as “exemplary” whilst saying teachers worked hard to allow their pupils to flourish.

He said: “Students are proud of their school and this is reflected in how they wear their uniform and their welcoming and courteous treatment of visitors.

"They demonstrate impeccable behaviour when moving to and from lessons and in their breaks and lunchtimes.

“Teachers provide students with outstanding role models and staff are unanimous that behaviour is a strength of the school.”
