The cliff tumbled away taking the pavement and part of the carriageway with it, and damaged property in Manor Way Industrial Estate below.

The closure affects traffic travelling between the railway station and Ebbsfleet United's football stadium.

A statement from Kent County Council says the road has been shut due to a 'major carriageway collapse / water leak.'

Firefighters were called in and teams from KCC Highways, Thames Water and the police are on site.

They say the closure is expected to remain in place until further notice and diversions were put in place overnight.

A fire service spokesman said: "Specialist firefighters from KFRS' Technical Rescue team attended the site of a landslide believed to have been caused by a water leak in Manor Way, Swanscombe.

"A commercial building was affected by the landslide, but thankfully there are no reported injuries with all persons accounted for."

A Thames Water spokesman said: “On Monday, April 10, we responded to reports of a large burst water main on Galley Hill Road (A226).

"Our engineers have shut off the water supply from the affected mains pipe and we are keeping local customers’ taps flowing using tankers.

“We are working alongside the local authority who are assessing the road structure and will liaise with them to plan and carry out the repair.

“The police have closed the road and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to local residents and motorists during this time.”
