Train in the snow

Snow has led to commuter delays and a school closure in Gravesend.

About an inch fell in the borough overnight, making some travel routes treacherous and others too slippery to risk.

Thamesview School, in Gravesend Road, is closed today, while other schools are open but monitoring the weather.

Rail routes in and out of London have also been affected, with Southeastern running and emergency timetable set to continue to the end of the week.

The only trains operating as normal are on the high speed lines and any Southeastern ticket-holders will be able to travel on them at no extra charge.

In a statement, Southeastern said: "To help ensure we are able to run the best service possible in these weather conditions, Southeastern is implementing a revised timetable which will provide a reduced service across the Mainline and Metro networks. This will mean a limited number of trains arriving into London before 0900.

"All High Speed services will run as per the normal timetable. However the revised timetable may still be subject to possible disruption due to the weather conditions."

Tickets will be accepted on London Underground on reasonable routes.

The snow has also led to the cancellation of an NHS West Kent Stop Smoking event, due to be held at Thamesgate Shopping Centre today.

More snow is expected this afternoon.
