A school has been forced to cancel a series of sports days due to poor weather.

Riverview Junior School in Cimba Wood, Gravesend, has said the decision was to ensure the safety of children.

Events were planned on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week, with one sports day for every year group.

However, staff found the field flooded with water after heavy rain both on Monday and yesterday evening.

Parts of the county were hit by the worst flooding in 30 years when the first yellow warning was issued on Monday, which then became a more severe amber warning.

Today, another yellow warning was issued by the Met Office, with bad weather predicted to continue until 11pm.

Teachers felt it was easier to cancel the week's activities in advance, to warn parents who had taken time off work as early as possible.

A year six trip to Shorne Country Park, Brewers Road, Shorne, has also been postponed until next week.

The sports days have been rearranged for the week commencing Monday, July 8.

A spokesman for the school said: "After the torrential rain on Monday and due to the great British weather forecast, a decision was made to cancel all sports days planned for this week.

"Parents were informed they would be rearranged and that they would be informed of the new dates. At all times we have to take into account the safety of the children."
