A teenager has died in a car crash at an accident blackspot near Vigo - the road's fourth fatality in three years.

The 19-year-old man suffered fatal injuries in the smash that left the car in which he was a front seat passenger on its roof early on Saturday.

He was one of five teenagers in a Citroen Saxo that lost control on the A227 Gravesend Road soon after 3am.

The victim, from Kings Hill, near West Malling, was pronounced dead at the scene, between Vigo Hill and Fairseat Lane.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, suffered head injuries and was taken to Maidstone Hospital with the other three passengers, a 19-year-old man and two women aged 18.

All four were released later the same day and the road was reopened at about 9.50am.

The victim's family have been informed and a post-mortem examination was due to take place this week as police appeal for witnesses to the accident.

The Messenger launched its B Safe - Action Now on the A227 campaign after the death of 96-year-old pedestrian Tom Hole in August 2008.

It followed the death of motorcyclist Paul Philpot, 46, near the George Inn pub on the same road in Meopham days before his 25th wedding anniversary in November 2007.

Rob Cooter, 17, died when his car flipped and rolled into a telegraph pole when he lost control on the A227 just hours after a Mother's Day meal last March.

Witnesses to the latest crash or anyone who saw the Saxo are asked to phone Kent Police's serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798 538.
