First-time traders are being given the chance to trade for a tenner as part of National Market Day later this month.

Outdoor pitches under the canopy at Gravesend Market will be available to individuals, schools, college and university students and community groups for £10 to test out market trading on Saturday, June 30 as part of the national scheme backed by Gravesham council.

Stallholders are keen to attract more shoppers to Gravesend indoor market as well as promote its rich history.

The event has been organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities in response to recommendations by retail guru Mary Portas on how to rejuvenate high streets.

Market trader Barry Reynolds recently set up his home and garden stall in Gravesend market after moving from a market in Maidstone.

He believes events such as National Market Day are vital to keep the industry going.

He said: “Markets are dying a death all over the country so it’s good to be able to promote ourselves in this way."
