The search for a new home for a town's Post Office is still on after an "unexpected" change to relocation plans.

The company had to move its main town branch in Gravesend out of WHSmith in the St George's Shopping Centre as the store was shutting at the start of the month.

The search is still on for a new Post Office site

Since the closure on March 1, it has been looking for a new suitable site since the planned location fell through.

WHSmith was at number 37 Kempthorne Street while the new branch was going to be just a few doors away at another unit at number 34.

In a letter to customers, MP Adam Holloway and local councillors in February, the firm revealed the move would not be happening and the search for a new home had begun.

But the Post Office has since confirmed it has had many interested retailers who want to take on the shop and they are currently submitting their applications.

All will be considered and narrowed down to one so a consultation can then begin.

A Post Office spokesman added: "We are working hard to try to restore service to the town centre as soon as possible.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused by any temporary closure, which was beyond our control."

The closest alternative branches are Thames Way Post Office, which is inside the Asda superstore, or Old Road West Post Office. Both are approximately 0.9 miles away from the current branch.
