A council is warning people after a caller tried to gain entry to a person’s property in a potential ‘scam’.

A resident in Meopham reportedly received a call from someone claiming to be from Gravesham Borough Council and saying they needed to carry out work.

The caller said they needed to gain entry to the person’s property to carry out checks on electrical equipment.

However, the council has confirmed it does not carry out electrical inspections at private properties, and the caller does not work for them.

A council spokesman said: “We'll always make appointments with our tenants to visit council-owned properties if we need to.

“If you have any doubts about someone claiming to be a council employee, do not let them in. Instead, call our customer services team on 01474 337000 to confirm their identity.

“If it is one of our team, they will be happy to wait while you check their identity with us.

“Our employees will have an ID card and a Gravesham Borough Council Van. Please make your friends and neighbours aware of this advice.”
