Steve Brown has ruled out the possibility of paying any more transfer fees ahead of the new season.

The Ebbsfleet boss signed Daryl McMahon from Dover for £13,000 earlier this summer but while Fleet may pay compensation to land out-of-contract players under 24 – a fee is still to be agreed with Dover for midfielder Dean Rance – Brown will complete his squad with free agents.

He said: “I wanted more than Daryl McMahon the footballer, which is why I was happy to pay the £13,000 for him.

“But there are enough good players out there to avoid paying any more transfer fees.

“We may have to pay compensation for a couple of out-of-contract players who are weighing up their options. If they decide Ebbsfleet’s the club for them, then we’ll look at that.”

Former Dagenham winger Dominic Green remains on trial while Brown is waiting to hear from defender Mat Mitchel-King, who has spent time with the Fleet and Dartford this summer.

Brown, whose side host a Gillingham XI on Saturday, added: “Dominic is technically a wonderful player and gives us a nice balance on the left. The fitter we can get him the better, with regards to what we can get out of him.

“Mat Mitchel-King played against Dartford, then Dartford asked him to play for them. They were perfectly entitled to do that but now I’m waiting to see whether he wants to come back and play for us against Gillingham."
