Ebbsfleet United boss Daryl McMahon on the 3-1 win over Aldershot Town

A change of formation by Daryl McMahon made all the difference for Ebbsfleet on Saturday.

Fleet started with a back-three against Aldershot but conceded early and looked all at sea.

The Shots had chances to increase their lead and McMahon took decisive action by switching to a back four.

The manager moved Sam Magri from the left-hand side of defence to right-back while right-winger Myles Weston reverted to left-back.

Fleet now looked tighter at the back, held onto the ball better and looked threatening every time they went forward.

Sean Shields scored twice and Andy Drury was also on target as they came from behind to win 3-1.

McMahon said: "I wasn’t happy with the start. We started really slow and Aldershot moved the ball well.

"In the first 20 minutes we were way too lazy in terms of positionally, getting back into shape quicker but once we got a foothold in the game, I thought we were very exciting going forward.

"When we changed shape and put Weston to left-back, tweaked it a little bit, we got on top of them and didn’t really come off being on top.

"We actually practiced (that system) in training this week.

"I think Westy can play there and it gives us another attacking threat from deep in that position.

"I thought he combined well with Shieldsy, which pushed Shieldsy a little bit higher, and that helped him."

The attacking options at McMahon's disposal are frightening.

Against the Shots he started with Danny Kedwell, Corey Whitely, Shields, Weston, Ebou Adams and Drury and was able to leave Luke Coulson, Michael Cheek, Darren McQueen and Jack Powell on the bench.

Fleet again used the 'box system' in midfield with Drury and Dean Rance sat behind Adams and Whitely.

"It gives us different passing options," McMahon said. "If you write down all the players we’ve got, they don't fit into a normal formation so we’ve got to think of something different.

"With the attacking players we’ve got in the squad, we’ve got to tweak the shape sometimes to get players on the pitch.

"In that top half of the pitch, we’re at home, with Shields, Weston, Kedwell, Whitely, Adams, Rance and Drury and they’re hard to play against for anybody - if we get it right and our tempo’s right.

"As the game went on, we got better at that and Luke Coulson coming on had an impact. Michael Cheek had a good chance when he came on as well."

Ebbsfleet would have won by more had it not been for the brilliance of Shots keeper Jake Cole.

McMahon said: "The performances at home have been good. We have created chances and hadn’t got the goals we deserved so it was good to win today and we could have had more goals.

"I wasn’t too worried (after losing the first two home games 1-0).

"I would have liked to score some goals against Sutton and Chesterfield but when you create the amount of chances we do, you know goals are going to come.

"There’s too many players in the group that can score goals and what we said in those games is bearing fruit now."
