Josh Payne scored one of the goals of the FA Cup first round - but it wasn’t enough to send Ebbsfleet through.

The on-loan Crawley midfielder blasted home a right-foot rocket from nearly 40 yards to put Fleet ahead against Notts County but their fellow National League side stole the headlines with an injury time winner to go through 3-2 at Stonebridge Road on Saturday.

“It was an eventful tie,” said Payne. “We’re gutted about the result, and it was a tough one to take.

“If you look at the chances we had, it could have quite easily gone the other way.”

On his wonder goal, Payne added: “The goal was nice for me on a personal note but the main thing was to get the win and we couldn’t do that.

“It would have been nice to win the tie with that goal. I put my head up, there were 10-15 yards in front of me so I thought I’d have a go. As soon as it left my foot I thought ‘it felt alright’ and it’s gone in.

“I rarely score if I’m honest but when I do it’s normally half-decent. It was nice to score in that manner but the result is the main thing.”
