A dog had to be treated for a suspected broken paw after falling 100 feet from the coastal cliffs near Reculver.

The labrador named Drum was near the Bishopstone area with his owner from London when the accident happened at 4.41pm yesterday.

Coastguard and RNLI lifeboat crews were dispatched - and took him to the lifeboat station in Whitstable for treatment.

Herne Bay Coastguard deputy station manager Matt Stickels said: "We were called to the cliffs where there were reports a dog had fallen.

"Unfortunately, the dog owner was not from the area and was unable to give a precise location.

"After an extensive search of the area the dog was located. Due to the remote location, we requested further assistance from Whitstable lifeboat.

"The injured dog had a suspected broken paw, and was carefully transferred to the lifeboat station at Whitstable."

At the station, Drum was treated by an on-call vet and his paw was wrapped in ice to reduce the pain.

Mr Stickels added: "Dog owners are reminded to please keep dogs on a lead when near the edge of cliffs."
