People were shaken awake overnight as a loud bang rocked an area of Kent stretching from Herne Bay to Canterbury.

Those shaken from their slumbers took to Twitter to report the huge noise - believed to come from a particularly violent or close thunderstorm.

Chris Johnson said: "Got woken up by a massive bang at 2am in Herne Bay. Anyone else hear it? Definitely a few lights on in houses following it??"

A loud bang over Canterbury and Herne Bay is believed to have been caused by a storm

Someone called @EmBrown37 saw the spectacular storm. She said: "Huge clap of thunder then huge hail storm car alarms going off in my street.

"It's all white out there! Madness."

Sophie McAra said she heard it as far away as Canterbury, with Natalie Worrall saying she'd heard it was thunder.

She added: "It was so loud!! All the car alarms were going off."

But the freaky March weather is set to turn - with snow and sleet warnings coming into force later this week.
