Grass fire triggers emergency response in West Hythe

Emergency services are racing to a grass fire in Kent.

The blaze broke out in the North Downs escarpment above West Hythe, off Burmarsh Road, in an area known as The Roughs today.

A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "We've received a number of calls. We are in place at Hythe at the moment.

"We have had reports that a pill box is smoke logged and the grass around it is on fire.

"Two appliances are in attendance, we received the call at 1.49pm today."

Pictures show smoke billowing from the hills' parched grass.

It is the latest in a string of field fires which have blighted the county in recent weeks.

At the weekend, fire officers called on the public to remain vigilant amid the "tinder dry conditions".
