Residents are being warned to be on their guard after two burglars pretending to check water supplies made off with a quantity of jewellery.

It happened in Kingfisher Avenue, Hythe, yesterday at about 9.45am.

A man knocked on the door of a property several times waiting for the occupant, a woman, to answer.

It is said the man persuaded her to take him into the kitchen where he asked for the taps to be turned on.

The main door was left open whilst this happened.

The occupant believes a second person entered the house using the open main door but she was distracted by the man in the kitchen.

It is reported the man then left the house and a quantity of jewellery was then identified as having been stolen.

The man who went to the kitchen is described as white, aged 35 to 50-years-old, 5ft 8, slim build with short brown hair.

He is reported to have been wearing a distinctive fluorescent yellow and green short-sleeved jacket that had TNT written in black, circled letters on the front.

He is also said to have been wearing ash-coloured three quarter length trousers.

Detective Sergeant Stephanie Devon said: "We are treating this as an isolated case but would like to remind people how they can stay safe in their homes.

"Bogus callers will trick their way into a house pretending to work for a utility company or other official authority. They will often wear all or part of an official uniform and carry fake identification."
