There’s a beacon of hope for the coming winter.

An unseasonal codling caught by angler Shane Pullen at Dungeness might just be a revival of a species that for the last ten years had almost vanished!

The catch came from a venue steeped in cod fishing history.

Back in the late 1960s an angler called Leslie Moncreiff made some remarkable catches with fish to over twenty pounds. Leslie also created long casting rods that started the boom in distance casting.

Sadly now passed away this photo would have brought a smile to his face.

Elsewhere, two of our local anglers recently caught ‘old warriors’ from different venues.

A 24lb mirror carp caught by Jamie Smith on his local canal
A 30lb fish to Steve Dale from a local syndicate lake

Their catches highlight the longevity of carp with both well over 20-years-old and looking a bit battle worn! Both were still very welcome catches.

The first is a 24lb mirror carp caught by Jamie Smith on his local canal and the second is a 30lb fish to Steve Dale from a local syndicate lake. Well done to you both.

*The Marines Angling Club resumed their fishing league last Friday, with 12 anglers turning out to fish.

John Chidwick took top spot with 13 fish for 11lb 13oz. Second was Billy Johnson (14 fish for 10lb 5 1/2oz) and third Tony Libby (8 fish at 5lb 5oz. Heaviest fish was a bass of 1lb 110z for John Chidwick.
