NIRJ DEVA: "These proposals are highly irresponsible"

A PLAN by the German government to impose a tax on airline fuel could have a serious knock-on effect to the Kent economy.

Nirj Deva, member of the European Parliament for the county, described the suggestions as "bad for business and bad for Kent".

Mr Deva said: "These proposals are highly irresponsible and have the power to undermine the local economy of east Kent as a result of less air traffic and job losses.

"The airline industry is currently suffering from high fuel prices and to impose extra taxes on fuel will seriously jeopardise the future of many smaller airlines flying out of Manston airport.

"I will do all I can to oppose the passage of this legislation in the European Parliament.

"This proposed tax puts airlines from EU members at a disadvantage when compared to the rest of the world. If imposed, it will be another blow to the competitiveness of the British economy and a slap in the face to the people of East Kent."
