SCENERY designed and created by an award-winning east Kent firm will be seen by cinemagoers in the fantasy film The Golden Compass from Friday.

Jali, based at Barham, near Canterbury, was asked to supply a variety of bespoke decorative wood and metal elements, including an ornate brass inlaid floor for the operating theatre for the blockbuster.

Using its state-of-the-art robotic and laser cutting machines, the company’s engineers worked closely with film set designers to construct several backdrops and intricate scenery for the epic, which stars Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.

Jali managing director Nicholas Showan said: “It was great fun to be involved with a major film such as The Golden Compass.

“Jali worked with the design and construction team at Shepperton Studios where the sets for Mrs Coulter’s chamber, canteen, corridor, operating theatre and incision machine were built.

“I was delighted Jali was asked to provide custom-made parts for the movie. It’s a tremendous accolade for us to be recognised by the film industry.”

Jali manufactures made-to-measure furniture such as bookcases, cupboards, radiator covers and drawer units.
