The incoming county chairman of an organisation which represents rural landowners and businesses says Brexit could "completely reshape" rural work and life for generations.

Gary Walters will take over as chairman of the Kent branch of the CLA in November - replacing Allan Buckwell.

Mr Walters runs a fourth generation family farming business based on the outskirts of Canterbury.

He said: “It has been a privilege to have worked alongside Allan during his chairmanship and I am very pleased that he has offered to assist me with his knowledge and expertise. This is especially important given the current Brexit situation.

“Whatever the outcome of the Brexit negotiations, the issues being debated and potential changes mean that the next few years could completely reshape the rural landscape and economy for generations to come.

“It is therefore vitally important that CLA members fully engage with this process so that their views can be promoted on their behalf.”

As Kent branch chairman, Mr Walters will be representing more than 700 landowners, farmers and rural businesses across the county.

CLA south east regional director Robin Edwards said: “We wish to place on record our sincere thanks to Allan for his tremendous work, ideas and enthusiasm over the course of his chairmanship, and are pleased he has accepted a role on our national policy committee.

“We are delighted to welcome Gary into the role and look forward to working closely with him over the next few years.”
