Brothers from Kent buy brewery

BROTHERS born in Chatham have put even more fizz into their business by snapping up an historic Liverpool brewery in a deal worth more than £3 million. Sudarghara and Ajmail Dusanj left Chatham in their mid-20s, after a number of years running small shops.

Ten years ago, they bought the drinks distributor Gardner-Shaw, based in Stourbridge in the West Midlands, but with a Kent depot in Northfleet. Their company, founded in 1919, has now bought the 150-year old Robert Cain brewery and its nine tied pubs in Liverpool from the Danish Brewery Group. They paid £3.4m for the brewery, plus more for its substantial assets.

The Dusani brothers have transformed Gardner-Shaw into a highly successful business. Cains is the last remaining brewer in Liverpool and prized by lovers of real ale.

Sudarghara Dusanj said: "We believe that the success of Cains depends on meeting the needs of a changing marketplace. We will be using the best of the traditions and processes that have enabled Cains to produce award-winning beer while modernising and introducing new products, processes and practices where necessary."
