KENT County Agricultural Society has announced its plans to boost the county’s sporting status with the creation of an equine 'centre of excellence' at Detling.

Bosses at the Kent Showground want to investigate how facilities at Detling could be maximised for equestrian use and potential Olympic training facilities.

Board members feel Detling’s prime location close to London, and its proximity to excellent road and rail links between the capital and Europe makes the site an attractive proposition for Olympic teams requiring training camps.

Leading the venture is Kent County Agricultural Society vice-chairman George Jessel who is working with interested partners Kent County Council, Hadlow College, and Bell Equine Veterinary Centre.

Expert equestrian guidance is being provided by top trainers Marietta Fox Pitt and Francesca Sternberg.

Mr Jessel said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Kent to put itself on the equestrian map and at the same time improve facilities for the annual three-day Kent Show.

"The partnership with Hadlow will enhance their ability to cater for an expanding market of further education in the horse industry and will help strengthen the local competition base by encouraging young riders."

Kent County Council cabinet member for regeneration, Alex King, said: "Detling could offer the ideal venue for a high quality equestrian centre that would serve the whole of the South East.

"It has excellent connections and exciting potential."
