Gissa Loan - Barclays wants to say yes

Bank loans are ready and waiting for small firms if only they would ask.

That's the message from Barclays as it prepares to host two lending clinics in Kent.

Responding to widespread criticism that banks are failing to provide money for growth, Barclays aims to show firms that loan finance is available - but they need the confidence to ask.

According to research, only 15 per cent of businesses applied for a loan last year, reflecting a crisis of confidence among businesses. It also revealed that before they apply, only 42% think they will get a loan whereas 75% actually do.

Lending clinics are a nationwide scheme, with two in Kent held next week in Barclays Gravesend on Tuesday and Barclays Ashford on Thursday.

Bank experts will explain the loan application process and answer key questions. Providers of alternative finance will also speak about other options. Business chiefs will be able to grill bank bosses.

Barclays insists it is continuing to lend and committed more than £7bn to small and medium firms (SMEs) in the first six months of the year. At the same time, the balance of deposits held in SME current accounts rose sharply suggesting a lack of confidence by businesses to invest.

Jason Small, area business manager for Barclays Business in North Kent pictured above, said: "Research shows that half of SMEs are planning for growth, but are reluctant to approach their banks for finance. As small businesses play a major part in driving both local and national economic growth, it is vitally important they feel confident to lend from banks. Barclays is fully committed to supporting small enterprises in the Kent and we are very much open for business."

The Kent clinics take place between 5pm and 7pm. More information at www.barclays.co.uk/businesslendingclinics, or call 0845 124 6501.
