Carl Davis has been conducting at the castle for more than 20 years

THE first public performance of this year's BBC World Cup theme tune will take place at Leeds Castle.

The theme that will stir the hearts of football fans throughout the country has been arranged by Carl Davis MBE, renowned conductor at the castle's open air concerts for more than 20 years.

The public world premiere of the four-minute choral version of the piece will be given at the concert, sponsored by Norwich Union, on Saturday, June 24.

It is a fantastic opportunity to hear the theme performed live and celebrate the best of British under the summer night sky.

The selections chosen to introduce the BBC World Cup 2006 coverage are taken from Handel’s Hail The Conquering Hero from Judas Maccabeus – also known as the hymn Thine Be The Glory.

Mr Davis was born in New York in 1936, but has lived in England for many years. He is married to actress Jean Boht, known to millions as Ma Boswell from the BBC show Bread.

Whether conducting or composing music for ballets, musicals, television or films, Carl’s versatility is extraordinary. His "Grand National" theme tune from the film Champions will be familiar to many sports fans.

Now in his 70th year, Carl's performance at the acclaimed Open Air Classical Concerts will be heralded by a Spitfire flypast, paying tribute to the 70th anniversary of the iconic plane’s first flight.

The second Leeds Castle Open Air Classical Concert takes place on Saturday, July 1.
