Record number of trains run on time

More Southeastern trains are running on time than ever before, according to new figures.

Network Rail, the track management business, recorded that 91.6% of all the operator's trains arrived at their destination on time - the best achievement since the industry set up the public performance measurement system.

Punctuality rates for both high speed and traditional services are combined in the new figures.

At the same time, Southeastern and Network Rail are forming an alliance with the aim of boosting efficiency and speeding up improvements to passenger services.

They claim that streamlined decision-making and a more passenger-focused operation will be achieved at lower cost.

Charles Horton, Southeastern's managing director, said the latest punctuality figures were a great achievement, but there was still a lot more to do.

"This is just one target and we need to continue to make improvements so that passengers can continue to travel by train on a reliable service," he said.

The new alliance - one of several that Network Rail has signed with operators - "formalised" an already close working relationship.

Fiona Taylor, Network Rail's route managing director for Kent, said: "Working more closely with the train operators, with decision making devolved to the front-line and better aligned incentives will, I believe, bring substantial benefits.

"The alliances will deliver a better service for passengers and freight users and at lower overall cost to the taxpayer."
