A VAST expansion of the Tesco Extra superstore at Broadstairs has created around 50 new jobs.

The store now employs 590 people from the area at its Margate Road site following the extension to the first floor.

More than 300 people applied for the jobs, which ranged from security to checkout staff.

The store’s size will stand at 102,000sq ft when it officially reopens on Monday, September 4, making it one of the largest in Kent.

Store manager Michael Forbes said the recruitment programme had been a great success and the response had delighted him.

Mr Forbes said: “The new jobs that have been created with the extension will enable more local people to enjoy a successful and fulfilling career with Tesco. We offer a complete and comprehensive training programme to support both full and part time workers as well as the added convenience of flexible working hours.”

The new floor is largely dedicated to family clothing with fitting rooms and a clothing desk, a lift and a travelator, as found in airports, allowing trolleys to be taken upstairs. Downstairs under the mezzanine floor, there are expanded health and beauty, baby and home and leisure departments.

Recycling facilities in the car park now include units for plastic, glass, clothing, shoes, paper and carrier bags.
