NEWLY-installed CCTV cameras have so far caught more than 100 motorists using the wrong side of the road to avoid traffic queues in the village of Iwade, near Sittingbourne.

The cameras were erected on the Old Ferry Road, leading to the Isle of Sheppey, a month ago after an increasing number of impatient motorists continued to drive carelessly.

They have been avoiding queues of traffic along the A249 at the Kingsferry Bridge roundabout where works are being carried out for the new bridge.

Swale police have previously sent out patrols to try and deter motorists but to no avail.

Those motorists caught on CCTV will be sent a letter ordering them to attend Sittingbourne Magistrates' Court for offences such as careless driving and failing to conform to a road sign.

PC Dick Denyer, of Swale Police, said: “We have over 100 stills to work through, and I have found it alarming how many people have driven in this dangerous manner.

“Not only does the act enrage law-abiding motorists but I feel it creates a situation where an accident is waiting to happen.”
