2,000 people apply for 240 Christmas temp jobs at John Lewis Bluewater

A Kent department store has received a staggering 2,000 applications for just 240 temporary Christmas jobs.

Just one in eight people who applied for roles at John Lewis Bluewater have landed work during the retailer's busiest trading period of the year.

They will now be given retail skills training and assigned to various departments across the store, including the Christmas shop, furnishing accessories, homeware, fashion and electrical technology.

It comes just a day after official figures showed unemployment among 16-24 year olds had smashed through the one million barrier.

Temporary roles are eagerly sought by unemployed people of all ages and also by young people in full-time education looking for holiday jobs.

John Lewis Bluewater's 240 extra partners, as employees at the company are known, will support full-time staff throughout the day and during extended opening hours.
