A £200,000 appeal has been launched to save a 16th century landmark.

The money is needed to restore the Grade 1 listed Watergate at Aylesford Priory.

The Friars hope to enlist the help of the local community to raise the cash after routine maintenance uncovered the Watergate, the main entrance to the priory for those travelling by river, had unsafe rendering.

There is also “alarming” decay in the timber framework.

The Prior of the Carmelite Community, Fr Brendan Grady, said: “We are reliant on the generosity of our supporters though donations, grants and bequests. The Watergate is of significant importance.”

The appeal was kicked off on Tuesday with an open day at the priory on Tuesday.

Visitors were given guides of the historic sites, followed by a home made Friars’ cream tea served to the musical accompaniment of Last Night of the Proms harpist Ellen Smith.
