The 'evacuees' board a train at Birchington.

Wartime history was brought to life for children from a Thanet primary school when they sampled life as a Second World War evacuee.

The year six pupils from St Nicholas-at-Wade C of E travelled back in time almost six decades on a school trip with a difference to Dover Museum.

Dressed in outfits from the 1940s and carrying suitcases, 'gas mask' containers and teddy bears, dozens of youngsters mingled with rush hour commuters as they boarded a train at Birchington on Thursday.

Watch our video above of the children and deputy head teacher John Asher talking about their exciting adventure.
