GAS engineers are working at the scene of a gas leak that has resulted in the closure of the A2 in both directions in North Kent.

The road has been closed at the junction with the A227 and people are urged to avoid the area between Gravesend East and Northfleet as there is severe traffic congestion.

Kent Police is advising motorists to use alternative routes where possible, including the M20 and M25.

Emergency services are also at the scene.

It is thought a standpipe was damaged as contractors carried out roadworks. No homes have been evacuated.
