The sole Labour councillor in Maidstone has defected to the Lib-Dems. Cllr Daniel Moriarty made his move after being the only Labour survivor of the May 1 elections which saw the Conservatives take control of the County Town's local Council.

He said he had made his decision to quit before the election because he had been unhappy with the Labour party for "at least 15 months". Five years ago the council had 10 Labour members.
