Andy Hessenthaler has offered to help chairman Paul Scally choose Gillingham’s new manager.

Mr Scally denied Hessenthaler the chance of a third chance at getting the Gills out of League 2 but this week did appoint him a director of football.

Hessenthaler (pictured) could now play a key role in finding his own successor.

"That is down to the chairman and if he wants me to have an input then I will," said Hessenthaler.

"The chairman will make the final decision but if he wants to bounce things off me, then he knows I am here for that."

Hessenthaler’s new role was announced just eight days after he lost the job as manager of the club.

But Hessenthaler said: "It is not about an individual it’s about the football club and, of course, if he asked me to do it, then I would be there.

"He may not want me involved but if he wants me to do that, then I will make myself available. We just have to find the right person.

"I thought I was the right person and I still believe with another year we would have achieved that. I respect the chairman’s wishes but we have go back to what it’s about – it’s about the football club.

"I am sure the chairman will find someone who he feels is right for the football club."
