Andy Hessenthaler has returned to Gillingham for his second stint as manager.

The 44-year-old will be assisted by Mark Robson, who was first team coach under previous manager Mark Stimson.

Hessenthaler (pictured) was previously player manager with the Gills throughout their most successful period, taking them to 11 in the Championship.

He has spent the last three years with Dover Athletic, where he led them to two successive titles, before finishing up as runners-up in the Conference South last season.

Hessenthaler quit Dover on Thursday to pave the way to his appointment as Gillingham manager.

With over 300 appearances to his name, Hessenthaler is regarded as a legend among the Gills fans, but he now has a big task on his hands.

Gillingham were relegated to the Football League’s basement division on the last game of the season in May and an immediate return will be on everyone’s agenda.
