Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler has paid tribute to two-goal Chris Palmer.

Gills got their first win of the season on Saturday, courtesy of a goal in either half by Palmer, pictured, against Shrewsbury at Priestfield.

The three points thrilled Hessenthaler and left him wanting even more from the versatile midfielder.

"Chris scored from a long throw last week (at Bury) when he crept in round the back and he did it again," said Hessenthaler.

"He stepped up for the second penalty, showed good composure and tucked it away. He is a good pro, he still wants to learn and he causes problems with his set pieces.

"He did great and he knows that. But he has done that for six games – now he has to continue for the rest of the season."

Palmer fell out of favour under former Gills boss Mark Stimson, but has started every league game so far and Hessenthaler believes he is benefiting from an extended run in the team.

"I didn’t know much about Chris before I came," added Hessenthaler. "He was disappointed last season that he didn’t get much of a run-out but he is a fantastic footballer.

"He is getting a run in the team and he deserves to be there."
