ROAD safety campaigners and police are shocked by a magazine article which recommends some Kent roads as being among the best places in the country to break the speed limit and do wheelies.

In a feature entitled Bending the Rules, a stretch of road on the Hoo Peninsula near Rochester, the B2001, is listed 10th best for a corner.

The survey carried out for Performance Bikes magazine has been branded "sick" by leading Medway road safety campaigner Val Wells - particularly in the wake of deaths on the nearby B2000 and the A228 on the Hoo Peninsula this year.

The slip road off the M2 at junction three at Chatham is acclaimed in the magazine for "being possible to wear through an entire kneeslider in just one pass".

The M26 slip road on the M20 eastbound is described as "nothing more than a gentle curver, unless you take it over 140mph - then it tightens up".

The head of Kent's motorcycle unit, Sgt Jon Shearwood, attacked the article as "irresponsible" in a year that has seen 35 per cent more motorbike deaths on roads in the Medway area compared to last year.

He stressed: "Our message is, if you want to speed and to kneedowns go to a race track where there is no oncoming traffic and obstacles, like lamposts. Roads should not be used.

"Too many people are getting killed, so before you go out and do this sort of thing think of the consequences it might have on family and close ones."
