Bag robbery turns into murder hunt

WINIFRED HILL: died after trying to stop a robber

AN ELDERLY Kent woman who chased a robber after he stole her handbag died after he hit her and knocked her to the ground.

Winifred Hill, 76, had been shopping with a friend when she parked in Haig Road, Biggin Hill, and started to unpack her boot.

The robber stole the handbag from her car while Miss Hill’s 91-year-old friend sat in the passenger seat. As Miss Hill tried to rescue her handbag, the robber struck her and ran away.

She was taken to hospital but died later. The robbery happened on Tuesday, June 28, at about 4pm.

Police saw a car that may have been used in the robbery and arrested the passenger, a 36-year-old man, in Swanley on Saturday, July 2, and the driver, a 38-year-old man, in Bromley Road, Bromley, on Monday, July 4.

Police are now hoping more people will come forward with information. The case is being treated as murder.
